Psalm 16

Psalm 16

A miktam^[a] of David.

¹Keep me safe,^(A) my God,
for in you I take refuge.^(B)

²I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;^(C)
    apart from you I have no good thing.”^(D)
³I say of the holy people^(E) who are in the land,^(F)
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
⁴Those who run after other gods^(G) will suffer^(H) more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names^(I) on my lips.

⁵Lord, you alone are my portion^(J) and my cup;^(K)
    you make my lot^(L) secure.
⁶The boundary lines^(M) have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.^(N)
⁷I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;^(O)
    even at night^(P) my heart instructs me.
⁸I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand,^(Q) I will not be shaken.^(R)

⁹Therefore my heart is glad^(S) and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,^(T)
¹⁰because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,^(U)
    nor will you let your faithful^[b] one^(V) see decay.^(W)
¹¹You make known to me the path of life;^(X)
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,^(Y)
    with eternal pleasures^(Z) at your right hand.^(AA)

²²Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them.^(A) And having sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering and the fellowship offering, he stepped down.

²³Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting.^(B) When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord^(C) appeared to all the people. ²⁴Fire^(D) came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.^(E)

The Death of Nadab and Abihu

10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu^(F) took their censers,^(G) put fire in them^(H) and added incense;^(I) and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord,^(J) contrary to his command.^(K) ²So fire came out^(L) from the presence of the Lord and consumed them,^(M) and they died before the Lord.^(N) ³Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:

“‘Among those who approach me^(O)
I will be proved holy;^(P)
in the sight of all the people
I will be honored.^(Q)’”

Aaron remained silent.

⁴Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan,^(R) sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel,^(S) and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp,^(T) away from the front of the sanctuary.^(U)” ⁵So they came and carried them, still in their tunics,^(V) outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

⁶Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar,^(W) “Do not let your hair become unkempt^[a]^(X) and do not tear your clothes,^(Y) or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community.^(Z) But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn^(AA) for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. ⁷Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting^(AB) or you will die, because the Lord’s anointing oil^(AC) is on you.” So they did as Moses said.

⁸Then the Lord said to Aaron, ⁹“You and your sons are not to drink wine^(AD) or other fermented drink^(AE) whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance^(AF) for the generations to come, ¹⁰so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean,^(AG) ¹¹and so you can teach^(AH) the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.^(AI)”

⁵Examine yourselves^(A) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.^(B) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you^(C)—unless, of course, you fail the test? ⁶And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. ⁷Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. ⁸For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. ⁹We are glad whenever we are weak^(D) but you are strong;^(E) and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.^(F) ¹⁰This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh^(G) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.^(H)
